The 25th anniversary of gold hallmarking in India was celebrated at the Gem & Jewellery Show (GJS) organized by the All India Gem & Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), which concluded today. The event was attended by Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and Minister of New & Renewable Energy.
In his address, Joshi commended the efforts of jewellers who have embraced hallmarking, emphasizing its role in protecting consumer interests and solidifying India’s reputation as a trusted gold jewellery market. He also reiterated the government’s commitment to streamlining hallmarking regulations, making it easier for jewellers to comply and ensuring benefits for consumers.
“The Indian Gems & Jewellery industry has long been a cornerstone of our nation’s heritage and will continue to drive economic progress,” Joshi stated. “With over 650 BIS-accredited laboratories, hallmarking has reached every corner of India, ensuring the delivery of quality products to consumers. It is essential that we prevent misuse of the HUID system and work together to increase Assaying Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across the country.”
Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of GJC, expressed pride in the industry’s progress, saying, “It is with immense pride and gratitude that we welcome Pralhad Joshi to this grand occasion. Your presence underscores the Government’s unwavering support for our industry, and we are grateful for your time and involvement.”
The event featured speeches from prominent jewellers and trade representatives, celebrating the success of hallmarking. They reflected on how the initiative has protected consumers and bolstered India’s exports in the global jewellery market. The show was attended by leading jewellers, industry stakeholders, and international visitors, marking it as a resounding success.
