The inaugural Australia-China Winemaker Immersion Program was officially launched in Shanghai this week, marking a significant collaboration between Treasury Wine Estates (TWE), Australian Grape and Wine, and the China Alcoholic Drinks Association.
As part of the initiative, four Chinese winemakers will travel to South Australia for a four-week immersion into local viticultural practices, winemaking operations, and sustainability projects. Their itinerary includes industry activities, vineyard tours, and winery visits aimed at fostering cross-cultural exchange and professional development.
Speaking at the launch event, Penfolds Managing Director Tom King highlighted the historical ties between Australian and Chinese wine industries. “At Treasury Wine Estates, we’re proud of our history with China’s wine industry, which began when the first bottle of Penfolds was exported from South Australia to Shanghai in 1893,” he said. “This program cements our commitment to the long-term success of both industries, allowing us to learn from each other and strengthen collaboration.”
The exchange program has also drawn support from academic institutions and government departments, further deepening engagement between the two nations’ wine sectors. Candidates for the program were selected based on their technical expertise, career experience, and professional interests.
The 2025 cohort includes Ding Weikang from Northwest A&F University in Shaanxi, Gao Yujie of September Helan in Ningxia, Miao Chengpeng from Château Rongzi in Shaanxi, and Xue Churan of China Great Wall Wine Company in Hebei. Representing diverse backgrounds in winemaking and research and development, the participants are eager to gain insights into Australia’s wine industry.
The second phase of the program is set to take place in China later in 2025, where four Australian wine professionals will engage with Chinese industry experts and academic institutions during the Chinese vintage season.
