Overstory, the company behind the Tamar Valley wine brand Small Wonder, has announced the acquisition of a 24-hectare vineyard in Tasmania’s renowned Coal River Valley, located just 20 minutes from Hobart. This move significantly expands Overstory’s presence in one of Tasmania’s most prestigious cool-climate wine regions.
The purchase of the Marengo Road vineyard follows the recent opening of Overstory’s state-of-the-art winery in January 2024, marking a key milestone in the company’s ongoing expansion. Overstory plans to double its production capacity in Tasmania over the next three years, aiming to grow its wine portfolio and increase its reach in both domestic and international markets.
“We are thrilled to broaden our presence in Tasmania and take this next step in enhancing the quality and variety of our wine offerings,” said Paul McArdle, CEO of Overstory. “As with our Tamar Valley location, we are committed to obtaining organic certification for the Coal River Valley vineyard within the next three years, continuing our focus on sustainable, high-quality winemaking practices.”
The new vineyard, planted between 2017 and 2019, is home to a range of cool-climate varietals, with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as smaller plantings of Shiraz, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Viognier. This acquisition solidifies Overstory’s position as a leading producer of cool-climate wines in Tasmania and marks an exciting new chapter for both Overstory and its Small Wonder brand.
