Louise O’Hara, a pioneering Wicklow jewellery designer, is returning to her roots with Culu Design, a brand known for its bold and vibrant polymer clay jewellery. After spending years working with clay and honing her skills, Louise is bringing handcrafted statement pieces back into the spotlight.
For O’Hara, who has been working with polymer clay since her teenage years, creating jewellery has always been a passion. Now, as the designer behind Bray-based Culu Design, she crafts pieces that are colourful, unique, and timeless—designed to help wearers express their individuality.
O’Hara’s journey has been anything but conventional. After spending 20 years climbing the corporate ladder, she took a courageous leap at 40, leaving the corporate world behind to pursue her creative calling. Four years later, Culu Design stands as a testament to her belief that it’s never too late to follow one’s passion.
The jewellery market is experiencing significant growth. In 2024, Ireland’s jewellery market alone is estimated to have generated €183 million, with the global market reaching a staggering €347 billion. Experts predict that by 2033, the market will grow to €552 billion, driven by trends such as rising disposable incomes, changing fashion, and increasing demand for ethically made jewellery.
The boom in e-commerce has also played a crucial role, providing consumers with access to unique, independent designs from around the world. More people are now purchasing jewellery not only as gifts but also as a means of personal expression and self-reward. Louise O’Hara is proud to be part of this evolving market.
Reflecting on her journey, Louise shared, “I’ve been obsessed with the feel of clay for as long as I can remember. From squishing it as a kid to rolling little balls of Mala, and now working with polymer clay, it’s always been so satisfying. There’s something so grounding and therapeutic about it.”
At the heart of Culu Design is a commitment to sustainability and individuality. “My goal is to create pieces that celebrate individuality while keeping sustainability in mind. I want anyone who wears my jewellery to feel confident, empowered, and like the best version of themselves,” Louise added.
In 2024, Culu Design’s Autumn/Winter collection embraced vibrant neon and luminous shades, offering a refreshing contrast to the typical muted tones of the season. The brand continues to focus on empowerment and self-expression, with each piece designed to make a bold statement.
