This year, Nyraa made its debut with the first-ever Nyraa Fashion Week in New York City, spotlighting the artistry, innovation, and cultural transformation within South Asian designer fashion. The event served as a vibrant platform to showcase traditional crafts reimagined for modern luxury, set against an immersive backdrop of culture.
The week-long celebration featured stunning collections from designers such as Aisha Rao, Jatin Malik, Moledro, Paulmi and Harsh, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna, and Varun Bahl. Beyond the runway, it provided a space to champion South Asian craftsmanship and innovation, highlighting the designers who are reshaping the couture industry.
At the heart of the event is Nyraa, a fashion marketplace founded by siblings Nisha and Nikhil Saboo. Their vision answers a key question: What does South Asian identity mean in fashion today? This identity, as Nisha describes, is a blend of rich traditions and modern sensibilities. “The reason we started Nyraa was to better showcase the amazing creativity and talent from India, a side of the world that hasn’t been widely accessible or represented globally,” she explains.
South Asian fashion has long been a symbol of identity, reflecting deep cultural and historical roots. From the timeless elegance of Kanjivaram silk sarees to the intricate storytelling of Kalamkari and the grandeur of Zardozi embroidery, clothing in South Asia is not merely an aesthetic choice but a powerful testament to heritage and tradition.
However, for many in the diaspora, balancing cultural preservation with the desire to assimilate into mainstream culture has been a challenge. The personal story of Nisha’s regret about asking her grandmother to wear jeans instead of a saree highlights the internal conflict many have felt between honoring tradition and fitting into Western norms. Yet, the rise of cultural pride today is more than a visual statement; it is a celebration of identity and heritage.
This shift is also evident in the fashion industry, where Indian artisans, once hidden behind European luxury labels, are now stepping into the spotlight. Indian couture designers have built global brands, earning recognition for their craftsmanship and innovation. Nyraa’s mission embodies this change—championing self-expression and showcasing the full spectrum of South Asian creativity.
