Helsinki Fashion Week has become the latest fashion event to ban feathers from its runway, joining a growing movement toward more ethical and sustainable practices in the fashion industry. The event’s founder, Evelyn Mora, has signed the Feather-Free Pledge from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), committing to eliminate feathers from future shows.
Mora, who also founded the AI-powered software platform VLGE, previously made headlines in 2018 by declaring Helsinki Fashion Week leather-free. In a statement provided by PETA, Mora emphasized the importance of aligning fashion with contemporary ethical standards. “In 2024, with so many innovative and sustainable solutions available, there is no reason to support outdated, unethical practices,” she said. “I challenge consumers to live by their values and make purchasing decisions that are environmentally, socially, and economically responsible.”
The move follows a broader trend within the fashion industry, with events like Ibiza Fashion Festival and prominent designers such as Stella McCartney, Richard Malone, and Patrick McDowell already endorsing the feather-free initiative. Mora’s pledge reinforces her ongoing commitment to sustainability and reflects a growing awareness of the significant impact consumer choices have on the planet.
By embracing ethical alternatives, Mora encourages consumers to consider the long-term effects of their fashion and lifestyle choices, reinforcing the message that sustainability is not just a trend but a necessary shift for the future of the industry.
