Fine wine merchant Langtons is set to launch an online-only Champagne auction tomorrow, aiming to break its own record for the largest single-region auction in its history.
Titled Champagne: Auctioning the World’s Finest, the auction is presented in collaboration with Champagne expert and writer Tyson Stelzer. The event will feature a selection of rare, hard-to-find cuvées and wines from cult Champagne producers, including back-vintage releases, low-dosage bottles, and both 750ml and double magnum sizes.
Langtons’ current record for the largest Champagne auction is held by the Danny Younis Collection, which garnered $210,951 in sales in September 2023. The company now aims to double that total with this upcoming sale. Key lots include a Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 1971 magnum, expected to fetch up to $12,000, and a Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon Brut Karl Lagerfeld Edition 1998, anticipated to attract bids between $8,000 and $10,000.
Michael Anderson, Langtons’ Head of Auctions and Secondary Market, expressed excitement about the growing demand for Champagne in Australia. “Australians have always had a strong affinity for Champagne, but this desire has surged over the past decade,” Anderson noted. “We’re thrilled to offer this unparalleled opportunity to collectors, whether they’re looking to enhance an existing collection or start one from scratch.”
Langtons is hoping for similar success to that of Sotheby’s Ultimate Champagne Auction, held in Paris this June, where more than half of the lots exceeded pre-sale high estimates. The Australian market has seen significant growth, with Champagne imports increasing from 890,000 bottles in 2001 to 10.5 million in 2022, making Australia the world’s sixth-largest Champagne market by volume and value.
