23rd Street Distillery is marking the 2025 Lunar New Year with the release of an exclusive Australian single malt, the Year of the Snake Whisky, celebrating the Chinese zodiac’s symbolic elegance and wisdom.
Crafted with Kangaroo Island barley, the whisky undergoes meticulous production. It is distilled in a century-old copper pot still, aged in 15-year-old Galway Pipe Tawny casks, and matured in charred oak barrels. The resulting spirit features a bouquet of toffee, sundried raisins, and vanillin, paired with a palate rich in butterscotch, dried fruits, and warming spices.
Paul Burnett, the distiller at 23rd Street, emphasized the whisky’s connection to both the Lunar New Year and the dedication behind its creation.
“Each sip reveals a balance of indulgent toffee, ripe raisins, and a subtle warmth of spice—an experience crafted to evoke the richness of our heritage and the artistry behind every detail. We hope this release brings good fortune and warmth to all who experience it,” Burnett said.
The whisky is presented in an elegant gift box, with intricate artwork by Sydney artist Chris Yee. The design incorporates traditional Chinese symbolism and modern aesthetics, blending motifs of water to represent transformation and journey, and using rich red tones to signify Australia’s soil and vibrant cultural heritage.
“The snake symbolizes refinement, wisdom, and elegance,” Yee explained. “I aimed for the artwork to reflect the whisky’s journey, merging traditional Chinese elements with contemporary design.”
With only 3,600 bottles available globally, the Year of the Snake Whisky is a limited-edition collector’s item, retailing at $225. A fitting tribute to Lunar New Year, it offers a luxurious experience for enthusiasts and celebrants alike.
