Porsche has announced that it will not launch a fully electric version of the iconic 911 within this decade, but the introduction of a hybrid variant is already on the horizon. The new GTS model, set to debut before the end of the year, will be the first electrified derivative of the legendary sports car. For those seeking more power, a hybrid Turbo is expected to follow in 2025, coinciding with the 911 Turbo’s 50th anniversary in 2024.
This significant update was shared by Porsche Chief Financial Officer Lutz Meschke during a conference call regarding Q3 2024 sales. He revealed that the upcoming 911 Turbo will utilize battery cells sourced from Varta, following an agreement earlier this year to strengthen their strategic partnership. Porsche is also acquiring a majority stake in V4Drive Battery GmbH, a subsidiary of Varta.
Meschke noted that the lithium-ion round cells used in the 911 GTS, which features a 1.9-kWh battery pack, are currently undergoing industrialization to ramp up production. This move will enable Porsche to expand its sports car lineup with the hybrid Turbo variant in 2025. While the electric Taycan Turbo does not include forced induction or a combustion engine, the updated 911 Turbo is expected to retain its twin turbochargers.
In response to inquiries about the hybrid Turbo, Porsche spokesperson Luke Vandezande confirmed that a new turbo variant is in the works but did not provide a specific timeline. “As usual, we will choose an innovative drivetrain concept for the highest-performance derivative of our icon. However, we are not in a position yet to confirm the exact timing,” he stated.
The gas-only 2025 911 Turbo is already available in the United States, meaning its hybrid successor will not arrive until the 2026 model year. There are concerns that electrification may result in a significant price increase, especially considering that the GTS model starts at $166,895, which is $14,000 more than its predecessor. The Turbo currently starts at $199,195 for the coupe, reaching up to $245,195 for the Turbo S Cabriolet.
