Vincentian designer Karen DeFreitas made a striking debut at Paris Fashion Week 2024 with her Spring/Summer 2025 collection, “Canboulay,” presented by Flying Solo. This collection celebrates the vibrant spirit of Caribbean culture, drawing inspiration from the Canboulay festival, a significant celebration of resistance and emancipation.
Inspired by the majestic Moko Jumbies, the collection features bold silhouettes, intricate textures, and a modern take on traditional carnival characters, blending folklore with high fashion. DeFreitas collaborated with local artisans, showcasing Vincentian craftsmanship and sustainable design practices.
Notable contributions included Melanie Hyman’s macramé detailing, Natasha Frankov’s crochet work, and handcrafted accessories made by inmates through the Grow In Time Foundation. Trinidadian jeweler Crystal Williams also provided unique pieces.
DeFreitas emphasized the importance of storytelling in her designs, aiming to highlight Caribbean culture and heritage. “Canboulay is a tribute to our history and the artisans who support our community,” she said. Soka’s presence at Paris Fashion Week not only elevates the brand’s global status but also amplifies Caribbean voices in the fashion industry, merging heritage with contemporary style.
