The prestigious Rabanne fashion house showcased the world’s most expensive bag during its spring/summer 2025 collection at Paris Fashion Week on September 25. This remarkable piece, an 18-karat gold Nano bag, pays tribute to the late style icon Françoise Madeleine Hardy, who passed away in June. Created in 1969, the bag took 100 hours to craft in collaboration with French jeweler Arthus Bertrand.
Creative director Julien Dossena celebrated Hardy’s legacy by pairing the exclusive chainmail bag with a shimmering gold mini dress and metallic heels. Priced at $279,000 (€250,000), it surpasses even the famed Hermès Birkin, which ranges from $17,000 to $200,000. The record for the most expensive bag ever sold belongs to the Diamond Himalaya Birkin 30, which fetched $450,000 in 2022.
Throughout their careers, Rabanne and Hardy shared a close bond, with Hardy serving as a muse for the innovative designer. Dossena drew inspiration from a memorable moment in Rabanne’s history, highlighting Hardy’s iconic appearance in a dress made from 1,000 tiles and 300 diamonds. Hardy, who succumbed to laryngeal cancer at 80, is honored through this exquisite collection, including a handcrafted Ceramic bag and a Glass bag, both from 1969, available for order at the Rabanne boutique.
