The Akris Ai bag, a hallmark of the Swiss fashion house, continues to impress with its distinctive trapezoidal design as part of the A/W 2024 collection. First launched 14 years ago, the bag remains a staple, showcasing a blend of architectural inspiration and elegant craftsmanship.
The concept for the Ai bag emerged during a visit by Akris’ creative director Albert Kriemler to the abandoned Jinhua Architecture Park in China, curated by artist Ai Weiwei. Among the 17 pavilions designed by renowned architects, Kriemler was particularly captivated by a striking trapezoidal structure created by Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao. This experience ignited a creative epiphany, leading to the geometric form that defines the Ai bag, the brand’s inaugural handbag.
Originally crafted from horsehair, a material favored by 18th-century furniture makers like Chippendale, the Ai bag has since been offered in various materials, including leather, wool, cotton, shearling, and neoprene. Kriemler reflects on his choice of horsehair, describing it as a historical yet modern fabric: “It is lighter and more resilient than leather, and its colors deepen with use. Horsehair represents a new era of handbag refinement.”
Kriemler’s architectural approach extends beyond handbags to his entire collection, characterized by a careful balance of color, fabric, and simplicity. He believes that in today’s complex world, effective fashion should appear simple at first glance while serving a functional purpose.
For A/W 2024, Akris emphasizes multifunctionality and transformation in its designs. The collection features hybrid garments that can transition between styles—a coat that doubles as a gilet or jacket, and a trench that transforms into a dress or skirt. The silhouettes are sharply tailored and elongated, crafted from luxurious cashmere knits, practical cotton gabardine, and airy organza.
The Ai handbag collection mirrors this philosophy, allowing for versatile styling with three convertible looks: the signature design with a turn lock, a pure trapezoidal tote, and a classic shopper. The bag’s shape and the unique trapezoidal Akris clasp eliminate the need for overt branding, offering an enduring statement of elegance and distinction.
