The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has been honored with the 2024 Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Lennox-Boyd Trophy, recognizing its outstanding contributions to aviation safety.
The Lennox-Boyd Trophy, awarded to individuals, groups, or organizations for significant advancements in general aviation, flight training, piloting standards, or safety, has been presented to the AAIB for its exceptional work in these areas.
Martin Robinson, CEO of AOPA, praised the AAIB’s work, stating, “The quality of their reporting is exceptional, and we are delighted to present our most prestigious award to the AAIB in acknowledgment of their impactful safety recommendations, which undoubtedly save lives.”
Crispin Orr, Chief Inspector of Air Accidents, expressed gratitude for the award, noting, “We are deeply honored that our commitment to aviation safety has been recognized with this prestigious accolade. Our staff received this acknowledgment with great pride and humility.”
The trophy was presented by Sir Stephen Hillier GCB CBE DFC, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), to Senior Inspector of Air Accidents Bob Vickery during a ceremony held at Old Warden on Saturday, 7 September 2024.
The Lennox-Boyd Trophy, originally given to the Association of British Aero Clubs in 1953 by the late Rt Hon Alan Lennox-Boyd PC CH MP, was donated by Alan Tindal Lennox Boyd, 1st Viscount of Merton, who served as Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation under Winston Churchill. The trophy has been awarded intermittently to deserving nominees ever since.
