German battery recycling start-up Cylib, supported by major investors Porsche and Bosch, has officially broken ground on its inaugural European industrial facility. Located at Chempark Dormagen, between Düsseldorf and Cologne, the 236,000-square-foot plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2026, with a planned recycling capacity of 30,000 tons of end-of-life batteries annually.
The new plant will cater to clients across the automotive, battery manufacturing, and chemical sectors, enhancing the circular value chain within Germany. Cylib aims to play a pivotal role in establishing a robust European battery infrastructure, according to CEO Lilian Schwich.
In May, Cylib secured €55 million ($60.75 million) in funding from prominent German industry players Porsche and Bosch. This investment underscores the strategic importance of battery recycling in Europe, as the continent seeks to secure a stable supply of essential minerals for its green and digital transitions and reduce reliance on Chinese imports.
