On Wednesday, Air China and China Southern Airlines took delivery of their first C919 aircraft in Shanghai, heralding a significant advancement as China’s first domestically produced large passenger aircraft begins multi-operator service.
Air China has received an extended-range version of the C919, configured with 158 seats across two classes: 8 in business and 150 in economy. China Southern Airlines has opted for the standard-range model, featuring a three-class layout with 164 seats: 8 in business, 18 in premium economy, and 138 in economy.
Both airlines’ new aircraft come with customized cabin configurations, including personalized seating and comprehensive in-seat power options, emphasizing passenger comfort and operational flexibility.
The delivery took place at the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) final assembly facility in Shanghai’s Pudong district. During the ceremony, COMAC presented sales certificates and commemorative delivery keys to both airlines, symbolizing the formal transfer of the aircraft.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) also issued necessary documentation, including nationality registration, airworthiness certificates, and radio station licenses, ensuring both carriers meet regulatory requirements.
To date, COMAC has delivered nine C919 aircraft. China Eastern Airlines, the launch customer, has reported consistent operational performance since the aircraft entered service 15 months ago, operating five regular routes with over 3,600 commercial flights. This underscores the C919’s growing role in the domestic aviation market.
With its advanced technology, performance capabilities, and adaptability, the C919 trunk jetliner is poised for a promising market outlook, particularly given China’s expansive civil aviation sector. COMAC continues to enhance and refine the aircraft to meet market demands.
According to a market forecast by COMAC released in late 2022, China’s civil aviation market is expected to receive 9,284 new passenger jets, including 6,288 single-aisle jetliners, from 2022 to 2041. By 2041, China is anticipated to become the world’s largest single-country civil aviation market.
