BMW has announced a recall affecting more than 720,000 vehicles due to a potential fire hazard linked to the water pump’s electrical connector. The recall encompasses certain X1, X3, and X5 models, along with other unspecified vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the issue stems from inadequate sealing around the water pumps. This defect may lead to fluid ingress at the electrical plug connector over time, potentially causing a short circuit and, in rare instances, a fire.
To address the issue, BMW will inspect and, if necessary, replace the water pumps and plug connectors. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to redirect any fluid that could leak onto the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air house.
Affected vehicle owners will receive recall notifications in October and are advised to visit an authorized BMW center to have the necessary repairs performed at no cost.
