BMW has announced one of the largest vehicle recalls of 2024, involving 720,796 cars across several model lines due to a potential fire hazard. The issue stems from a possible short circuit under the hood, which could ignite a fire—ironically, the source of the short circuit is linked to the water pump.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW first became aware of the problem in January after a “thermal event” was reported in an unspecified U.S. vehicle. Subsequent investigations revealed additional incidents, prompting a detailed examination of the water pump and an associated electric plug connector. It was discovered that, under rare conditions, “blow-by fluid dripping from the intake air hose” could leak onto the connector, compromising its seal and allowing fluid to seep in, which could then lead to a short circuit.
BMW has documented 18 cases where complaints or actual damage resulted from this issue. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or accidents connected to the defect.
The recall, designated as NHTSA recall number 24V-608, covers a wide range of BMW models produced between 2012 and 2018.
BMW’s solution involves inspecting the affected vehicles’ water pumps and plug connectors and replacing them if damage is found. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to prevent fluid from reaching the connector in the future.
Dealers have already been notified of the recall, with individual owners set to receive notifications starting October 4.
