Merck KGaA, a leading German conglomerate, has announced the sale of its Surface Solutions unit to Global New Material International (GNMI) of China for €665 million (US$721.46 million). Surface Solutions specializes in pigments used to create pearlescent or metallic effects in coatings, plastics, and cosmetics.
The transaction, expected to be finalized in 2025, includes provisions ensuring job security for employees in Germany and the continued operation of the Gernsheim plant until 2032. Surface Solutions, valued at approximately €1 billion (US$1.03 billion), has been a significant player in the global pigments market.
Merck’s CEO, Belen Garijo, highlighted that the proceeds from the sale will bolster the company’s strategic core business and facilitate investments in materials for chip production. This move underscores Merck’s commitment to focusing on key growth areas while maintaining financial strength and operational efficiency.
The sale of Surface Solutions marks a strategic decision by Merck to streamline its portfolio and allocate resources more effectively, ensuring sustainable growth and innovation in its core business segments.
