BMW is reportedly advancing plans to bring its striking Skytop concept car into production, according to sources familiar with the matter. Prospective buyers have been contacted via email by BMW, gauging genuine interest in placing orders for the vehicle.
Initially discussed to potentially produce 20 to 25 units, BMW’s latest internal discussions suggest a production volume closer to 50 vehicles. The Skytop, based on the BMW M8 coupe, is positioned to be one of the brand’s most exclusive models, with anticipated prices around €500,000 ($825,000). This figure notably exceeds the price of the BMW M8 coupe, which retails for $380,000.
While specific pricing details have not been officially disclosed, industry observers recall BMW’s past ventures into high-end exclusivity, such as the M4-based 3.0 CSL homage priced between €600,000 to €700,000 ($990,000 to $1.15 million).
The Skytop, first unveiled in May, has garnered substantial acclaim across online forums and among BMW enthusiasts for its elegant design and absence of the brand’s signature oversized kidney grille. Unlike the BMW M8, which accommodates five occupants, the Skytop is configured strictly as a two-seater with a targa roof and retractable rear window.
Powering the Skytop is a robust twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine generating 460 kW (approximately 616 horsepower) and 750 Nm (approximately 553 lb-ft) of torque, channeled to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The potential production of the Skytop marks BMW’s strategic move to capitalize on its design prowess and cater to a niche market of luxury automotive enthusiasts. As discussions progress, BMW aims to solidify its position with this exceptional addition to its lineup, combining performance and exclusivity in a distinctive package.
