BMW has announced the forthcoming release of its revamped 2-Series Gran Coupe, which, despite being labeled as a new generation, is essentially a significant update of its predecessor. This refresh aims to enhance its competitiveness against the Mercedes-Benz CLA, with the mechanically-related 2-Series Gran Coupe following the same trajectory.
Fresh Look and Styling Upgrades
Exclusive renderings reveal the M Sport version of the 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe, incorporating design elements from the updated 1-Series hatchback. These unofficial images, based on patent drawings unearthed by Autoweek, showcase the compact sedan’s significant styling revisions from various angles.
Maintaining its original proportions, the 2025 model features extensively redesigned sheet metal. Unlike the previous model’s distinct front-end design, the new 2-Series Gran Coupe adopts the 1-Series’ grille, headlights, and bumper. The rear end benefits from sharper LED taillights inspired by the X2 and a sportier bumper.
The M Sport trims distinguish themselves not only through more aggressive bumpers but also through unique door handles, akin to those on newer BMWs like the X2. This raises questions about why BMW didn’t standardize these handles across all trims.
A minor yet notable update includes a slightly modified line on the C-pillar, reviving BMW’s iconic “Hofmeister kink.”
Interior Enhancements and Tech Updates
Inside, the 2025 BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is expected to mirror the interior updates seen in the new 1-Series hatchback. Key features include a new curved panel housing a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen. The redesigned center console will feature significantly fewer buttons, with new climate vents and metal accents enhancing its premium feel.
Performance and Underpinnings
The updated 2-Series Gran Coupe will ride on an improved version of the current FWD architecture, shared with the 1-Series, X1, X2, and various Mini models. Depending on the market, it will offer diesel, gasoline, and mild-hybrid engines, all paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The range-topping M235 xDrive model will drop the “i” from its name. Powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, it will deliver up to 312 hp (233 kW / 317 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque.
Expected Release
Although BMW has not officially announced the debut date for the updated 2-Series Gran Coupe, spy photographers have been capturing camouflaged prototypes for over a year. Therefore, it is anticipated that the new model will be released sometime in 2024.
