BMW is embarking on a transformative phase with the introduction of a new lineup of models, including the eagerly anticipated next-generation X5. This model is expected to leverage both the innovative Neue Klasse and the established CLAR platform, each incorporating significant design updates. Recent spy shots and renderings offer a glimpse into what the 2027 X5 might look like.
Earlier this month, Carscoops’ spy photographers captured the upcoming X5 undergoing tests under heavy camouflage. Despite the disguise, the prototype appeared markedly distinct from the current model, sparking interest in its final design. Renderings by Nikita Chuicko, based on recent prototypes, suggest that the 2027 X5 could present a more streamlined and contemporary appearance compared to its predecessor.
The latest renderings, produced by Kolesa, depict the new X5 with a design reminiscent of the Vision Neue Klasse X concept unveiled earlier this year. While the current X5 remains a solid vehicle, the new model introduces more modern aesthetic elements.
Notably, the front of the 2027 X5 showcases significant changes. Echoing the Vision Neue Klasse X, the new X5 features a slim, illuminated kidney grille that contrasts sharply with the larger grilles seen on recent BMW models. This smaller grille design harks back to the more compact kidneys of earlier BMWs. The updated LED headlights are seamlessly integrated with the grille and include new LED elements. The SUV also sports an aggressive bumper design, complete with sharp lines and black accents.
One of the most striking aspects visible in recent spy shots is the absence of traditional door handles. The renderings reveal electronic door handles extending from the B- and C-pillars, similar to those on the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
At the rear, the new X5 boasts slimmer taillights with a complex LED signature and a bold diffuser, though the practical need for rear downforce is minimal for an SUV of this type.
Unlike the Neue Klasse models, which will be exclusively electric, the 2027 X5 is expected to utilize BMW’s CLAR platform. This will allow for a range of powertrain options, from traditional internal combustion engines to hybrid and fully electric variants. While specific details are yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that the internal combustion engines will be more compact and designed with improved fuel efficiency in mind.
