Luxury winemaker Penfolds is marking its 180th anniversary with the launch of The Penfolds Collection 2024 and a special commemorative release: the Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz 2021.
The 2021 Bin 180, a product of the 2021 Coonawarra vintage, blends Cabernet Sauvignon from Block 10 and Shiraz from Block 5—some of the oldest and most iconic plantings in the Coonawarra region.
To honor this milestone, Penfolds collaborated with South Australian artisan Andrew Bartlett to create a limited-edition art piece encasing rare three-litre jeroboam bottles. Crafted from staves of Penfolds French oak barrels, the design features wood panels symbolizing 18 decades of Penfolds’ storied history.
Penfolds Chief Winemaker, Peter Gago, expressed the significance of the release: “Our goal was to craft a landmark wine to celebrate Penfolds’ 180th Anniversary. The exceptional parcels from the 2021 Coonawarra harvest, combined with the classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, resulted in the Penfolds 2021 Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz.”
The Penfolds Collection 2024 continues the brand’s Country of Origin series, featuring 25 wines from vineyards in Australia, the US, France, and China.
Highlights from the Australian segment include the flagship 2020 Grange, made from top parcels of South Australian Shiraz from the 2020 vintage. Gago describes this Grange as “assured and distinctive, offering both appeal and reward.”
Another standout is the 2022 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, celebrating its 60th anniversary, alongside 16 other Australian wines.
Penfolds’ exploration of Californian vineyards, begun 20 years ago, is showcased in this year’s US release, featuring four wines from the 2021 vintage: Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz, and 2021 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc.
From France, the collection includes the 2022 Penfolds II Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2021 FWT 585 Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot Merlot, marking the third release from Penfolds’ collaboration with Bordeaux’s Dourthe.
The collection also features the 2022 CWT 521 Cabernet Sauvignon Marselan from China, the second product of Penfolds’ Chinese Winemaking Trial (CWT), blending Cabernet Sauvignon from Shangri-La with Marselan from Ningxia.
Gago remarked, “The Penfolds Collection 2024 embodies 180 years of innovation, hard work, and the evolution of our house style. Our dedicated global team ensures the delivery of an increasingly diverse and consistently exceptional range of wines each year.”
The Penfolds Collection 2024 will be available worldwide starting Thursday, August 1, 2024.
