A rare 1960 Bentley S2 Drophead Coupe by H.J. Mulliner has surfaced for sale through a dealer in St. Louis, Missouri, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to acquire one of only 15 models ever crafted with drophead coupe coachwork by H.J. Mulliner. Originally showcased at the New York International Auto Show in March 1960, chassis B75LBR, featuring left-hand drive, comes with a storied past and underwent a thorough refresh in 2021.
Initially delivered to a Wall Street securities analyst, the vehicle later made its way to California under its second owner, residing there until the mid-1990s. Purchased by its current owner in 2016, the Bentley has been meticulously maintained. The car boasts a classic white exterior complemented by a tan convertible top and matching upholstery, epitomizing timeless elegance.
Powering the S2 is a replacement 6.2-liter V8 engine with twin SU carburetors, mated to an automatic transmission. Equipped with power-assisted steering, servo-assisted drum brakes, and adjustable lever-arm shock absorbers, the Bentley ensures a refined driving experience. Modern comforts include power windows, air conditioning, and a His Master’s Voice radio, blending luxury with contemporary conveniences.
Inside, the tan leather interior features wood trim and color-keyed carpeting, all meticulously preserved. Recently refreshed door panels and upholstery elements enhance the cabin, which retains its original Smiths instrumentation, including a 120-mph speedometer, clock, and a combined gauge for oil pressure, amperage, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The odometer shows 43,000 miles, with only 20 miles added by the selling dealer.
This Bentley S2 rides on 15-inch steel wheels with chrome covers and BFGoodrich wide-whitewall tires. The 2021 refresh included a rebuilt servo, new master cylinders, and a stainless-steel exhaust system. Comprehensive documentation, including the factory build sheet, Schoellkopf cards, and Canadian registration, accompanies the sale, offering a detailed history of this distinguished vehicle.
