Barco, a leader in innovative visualization solutions, announced that its UDX-4K40 projectors were pivotal in creating the stunning visuals for National Geographic’s immersive runway experience at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).
National Geographic introduced a groundbreaking fashion show, featuring holographic images of extraordinary animals alongside models, to celebrate the launch of its new series, QUEENS. This visually striking display was brought to life by Production Resource Group (PRG) using Barco’s UDX projectors.
Lifelike Holographs at NYFW
The biannual NYFW is renowned for its elite runway presentations and afterparties. For the 2024 winter edition, National Geographic presented “Fit for a Queen,” an immersive show spotlighting holographic projections of remarkable female leaders in the animal kingdom, such as elephants, lionesses, and bears, walking the runway alongside top models.
This innovative experience was designed to mark the premiere of QUEENS, a docuseries narrated by award-winning actress Angela Bassett, which explores the lives of female animal leaders in a narrative of queendom and empowerment.
National Geographic’s immersive approach pushed the boundaries of fashion show technology. Achieving the desired impact required the holographs to be realistic in color, texture, scale, and movement. The seamless integration of these lifelike animal projections with live models on the runway demanded meticulous attention to detail.
To realize this vision, National Geographic teamed up with PRG, a global leader in live event innovation known for its work on major events like the Super Bowl and the Olympics.
Precision and Power in Projection
PRG utilized its expertise in holographic projection to merge nature with fashion, creating an unforgettable immersive experience for the audience. The firm employed two UDX-4K40 Barco projectors to render lifelike animal images for the show. With REC.709+ color performance, the UDX projectors delivered high-quality images that faithfully represented the animals’ colors and textures.
Jeroen Hallaert, VP of Production Services at PRG, remarked, “The UDX projectors were a solid choice. Their powerful performance and superior lenses were game-changers in creating the immersive event. The UDX projectors delivered exceptional lifelike holographic animals, transforming the runway into a mesmerizing display of nature and fashion.”
The UDX projectors proved essential in bringing National Geographic’s vision to life on the runway, thanks to their advanced projection capabilities and precise color reproduction.
A New Perspective on Fashion and Nature
The show offered a fresh perspective on nature’s beauty through a vibrant fusion of fashion and technology. This unique blend captivated over 200 industry influencers, celebrities, fashion tastemakers, and media attendees at NYFW, showcasing the powerful potential of combining cutting-edge technology with creative storytelling.
