WASHINGTON — BMW of North America is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to concerns over potentially dangerous airbag inflators that could explode, posing serious risks to vehicle occupants.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects certain models including the 2006-2011 3 Series Sedan (324i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi), 2006-2012 3 Series Sportswagon (325xi, 328i, 328xi), and 2009-2011 3 Series Sedan (335d).
The issue arises from the possibility that the original steering wheel may have been replaced with a sport or M-sport steering wheel equipped with a Takata inflator. If the inflator malfunctions, it could release sharp metal fragments, potentially causing serious injury or death to occupants.
Despite no reported accidents or injuries related to this issue in the U.S. so far, BMW is taking proactive measures. Dealers will inspect and replace the driver’s airbag module as necessary at no cost to customers.
Owners of affected vehicles are encouraged to contact BMW or their nearest dealership for further instructions on how to proceed with the recall process.
