Indra has been selected by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide its Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI) systems, known as AeroBOSS, to improve air traffic control situational awareness and mitigate the risk of runway incursions. Approved by the FAA, AeroBOSS aims to address the growing global concern of runway incursions and can be deployed at over 250 FAA-staffed air traffic control towers and around 200 additional airports under the FAA’s Federal Contract Tower program upon request.
The FAA has included Indra’s SAI technology in its Qualified Product List (QPL), allowing for its acquisition and deployment across U.S. airports. AeroBOSS leverages ADS-B surveillance technology to gather data on aircraft positions and utilizes satellite connections and 5G networks to transmit this information, thereby providing real-time surface movement updates to air traffic controllers. This system plays a crucial role in airport safety management by significantly reducing the risk of surface incidents.
Indra has successfully initiated the deployment of its SAI system at Dallas Love Field Airport in Texas. The technology enhances automatic surface monitoring through ADS-B surveillance and cloud connectivity, noted for its rapid deployment and implementation capabilities. This system enables air traffic controllers to have a comprehensive understanding of aircraft positions on tarmacs and runways, effectively preventing incidents and ensuring safety for both airports and passengers. Indra anticipates that large and medium-sized airports across the United States will adopt this technology in the coming years.
Additionally, Indra has renewed its exclusive agreement with the FAA to supply Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) systems, having already delivered over 250 sets. These systems are crucial for guiding aircraft during their approach to airports and along their routes.
Innovation and Efficiency in Aviation Technology
With the signing of this framework agreement, Indra secures its position at the forefront of technological solutions in the U.S. market, aiming to modernize air traffic management. This initiative promises to enhance aviation safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Beyond the FAA, Indra also supplies air navigation aid systems to the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy.
Globally, Indra has equipped over 11,000 air traffic facilities and offers next-generation solutions capable of managing flights from gate to gate, ensuring the safety of 85% of passengers worldwide daily. This achievement cements Indra’s status as a global leader in aviation technology.
