BMW is poised to discontinue the petrol- and diesel-powered variants of its coupe-inspired SUV, the BMW X4, in favor of an electric replacement, reports indicate.
In a statement to Motor1 Italy, a BMW spokesperson acknowledged that the X4, while closely related to the popular X3 SUV, occupies a niche market and has not achieved the sales volumes of its sibling. Consequently, the current generation X4 is slated to conclude production in November 2025.
According to insights shared by Bimmerpost forum member ynguldyn, known for accurate BMW model predictions, the electric successor, likely to be named the iX4, is scheduled to commence production from November 2026. Production plans extend through mid-2034, reflecting BMW’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup.
Speculation also surrounds the potential introduction of a high-performance variant, the iX4 M, although details remain unconfirmed at this stage.
The upcoming iX4 is expected to leverage BMW’s forthcoming Neue Klasse electric vehicle platform, following the path set by the iX3 slated for release in July 2025.
The BMW X4, introduced globally in 2014 across two generations, has carved out a distinctive market presence with its coupe-inspired design. The current iteration debuted in 2018.
In Australia, sales data highlights a clear preference for the X3 over the X4. Since its introduction to the Australian market in June 2014, BMW has sold 12,050 X4s, significantly fewer than the more than 40,000 units of the X3 sold over the same period.
