Western Australia has introduced new legislation aimed at safeguarding retail workers, including those in liquor stores, from violent offenders, receiving widespread support.
Under the new laws, serial shoplifters and individuals who commit violent acts against retail staff now face potential jail time. Offenders who assault staff during their duties could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison, with a maximum of 10 years if a weapon is involved. Additionally, repeat offenders charged with multiple low-level stealing offences may also be subject to imprisonment after their third offence within a year.
Peter Peck, Chief Executive of LSA WA, praised the legislation as a significant step forward in creating a safer work environment. “It’s a good step to protect workers and keep people safe in their daily jobs,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to halt the violence and abuse endured by retail workers.
“I commend the state government on getting the job done,” Peck added. He also highlighted the opportunity to explore interventions after the first offence for low-level stealing, aiming to rehabilitate offenders before serious consequences like imprisonment become necessary.
Retail Drinks Australia also expressed support for the new laws, with CEO Michael Waters stating, “Retail Drinks welcomes the tougher penalties in Western Australia targeting assaults on liquor retail workers. There is no place for such behavior in society, and these measures send a clear message that offenders will face severe consequences.”
Waters called on other jurisdictions to implement similar measures to protect liquor retail workers nationwide. He noted Retail Drinks’ commitment to enhancing safety through initiatives like the Safe to Serve program, which advises store-owners on practical steps to bolster security against violence.
The new legislation reflects a concerted effort to address the safety concerns of retail workers and marks a positive stride in protecting their rights and well-being across Western Australia.
