In a boost for Australia’s craft brewing industry, Capital Brewing Co has announced the acquisition of the renowned Australian cider brand, Batlow Cider. The founders of Capital Brewing Co, Tom Hertel and Laurence Kain, expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, emphasizing Batlow’s authenticity and recognition within Australia.
“Batlow has always been a favorite in the venues we own,” said Hertel. “We are proud to take on custodianship and keep the iconic brand 100 percent independent and Australian-owned and operated.”
Kain echoed this sentiment, highlighting the personal and geographical connections to Batlow Cider. “We’ve loved serving Batlow for over 14 years. The brand’s dedication to quality and authenticity aligns perfectly with our values at Capital Brewing. Plus, Batlow’s proximity to our hometown of Canberra strengthens our bond.”
Capital Brewing, known for its B Corp certification, was particularly drawn to Batlow’s environmental values. “Our focus on social and environmental responsibility is crucial, and we are committed to reducing waste throughout our supply chains,” Kain said. “Batlow Cider’s use of imperfect fruit that would otherwise go to waste aligns perfectly with our ethos.”
The acquisition aims to increase cider production, thereby reducing waste. Additionally, the close proximity of Capital Brewery to Batlow will minimize freight and lower the overall carbon footprint of production. “Juiced apples will be transported directly from Batlow to Canberra, where they will be fermented and packaged at our Brewery in Fyshwick,” Kain explained.
Rich and Sam Coombes, the previous owners of Batlow Cider, expressed their satisfaction with the acquisition. “We are thrilled to see Batlow Cider under the custodianship of Capital Brewing Co. Their marketing and sales capabilities are impressive, and we look forward to the brand’s continued growth alongside their high-quality beers.”
Batlow’s apple-growing history dates back to 1922, a legacy that Hertel is eager to preserve and expand. “Almost every Aussie has had a Batlow apple in their lunchbox. The brand is rich in Australian history and heritage, and we appreciate how connected Batlow Cider is to its roots.”
With increased sales and marketing resources, Capital Brewing Co plans to significantly boost Batlow Cider’s production and sales nationwide, creating more jobs in Batlow and Canberra. Hertel assured fans that the beloved recipe would remain unchanged.
This acquisition marks a new chapter for Batlow Cider, maintaining its commitment to quality, heritage, and environmental sustainability while poised for significant growth under Capital Brewing Co’s leadership.
