Car and Driver sought clarification from BMW following a report by Automotive News suggesting the return of the BMW 6-Series coupe and convertible by 2026. A BMW spokesperson responded, stating, “…we feel it necessary to clarify that there are currently no plans to reintroduce the BMW 6-Series to the market for model year 2026, despite what is being widely speculated in automotive media circles.”
The speculation arose from an industry source involved in BMW’s supply chain, indicating plans for a new 6-Series based on BMW’s next-generation Cluster Architecture (CLAR). According to the report, the revived 6-Series is expected to debut as both a coupe and convertible, scheduled for release in the latter half of 2026. Production is slated to commence at BMW’s Dingolfing factory in mid-2026.
CLAR, known for supporting various powertrain options including gas-only, gas-electric hybrids, and all-electric configurations, underscores BMW’s approach to versatility. While specifics on the powertrain offerings for the anticipated 2027 model remain undisclosed, BMW’s strategy aligns with the multi-powertrain approach seen in the recently redesigned 5-Series sedan.
The last iteration of the BMW 6-Series, available in coupe and convertible forms, ceased production as 2018 models featuring options like a 315-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six (640i) and a 445-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 (650i). The 2019 model year saw the departure of the four-door Gran Coupe variant, distinct from the Gran Turismo hatchback also discontinued thereafter.
