Australia has secured a notable position at the 21st annual Decanter World Wine Awards, earning accolades that highlight its growing prominence in the global wine industry. Among the 18,000 entries, Australian wines clinched eight prestigious Best in Show medals and 10 platinum medals, affirming their exceptional quality on the world stage.
A standout achievement this year was the inclusion of two Tasmanian Pinot Noirs in the Best in Show category, marking a first for the region. The honored wines, Lowestoft 2022 Single Vineyard Jacoben Pinot Noir and Bay of Fires 2022 Pinot Noir, underscore Tasmania’s emergence as a powerhouse for this varietal.
Stefan Neumann, Regional Chair of Judges, praised the overall caliber of Australian Pinot Noirs, emphasizing their outstanding quality and global competitiveness. The awards reflect a trend towards recognition of Australia’s diverse wine regions and their commitment to excellence.
Liam McElhinney, Chief Winemaker at Lowestoft, expressed pride in Tasmania’s recognition, noting the international acclaim as a testament to the region’s exceptional terroir and fruit quality.
New Zealand also garnered attention with McArthur Ridge 2022 Southern Tor Pinot Noir from Central Otago receiving a Best in Show medal, highlighting the region’s prowess in producing world-class Pinot Noir.
Penny’s Hill from McLaren Vale secured a Best in Show for its 2023 Yeenunga Single Vineyard Grenache, celebrating the win as a validation of their renewed focus under new ownership.
Fermoy’s 2020 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River clinched another Best in Show medal, reaffirming the region’s reputation for producing exemplary Cabernet Sauvignon.
