Detroit’s Corktown district became a beacon of creativity and style as designers from around Michigan gathered for the twelfth annual Michigan Fashion Week. Held from June 7 to June 8, with preceding networking sessions from June 5 to June 6 at The Godfrey Hotel Detroit’s seventh-floor venue, the event showcased the vibrant intersection of streetwear and high fashion.
A total of 25 designers captivated attendees with their hand-crafted collections, each imbued with a unique message celebrating the spirit of Detroit. The runway presentations were complemented by a bustling market area in the hotel lobby, featuring local small businesses whose products resonated with the showcased designs.
Founder and executive director Loren Hicks expressed her vision for the event, stating, “My goal for Michigan Fashion Week is to highlight the beautiful talent we have here in Detroit. You don’t have to go to New York, you don’t have to go to L.A., you don’t have to go to Chicago, we’ve got all of that right here in the City of Detroit.”
Under the theme “glamour cloud: a breathtaking fusion of sophistication and innovation,” this year’s showcase unfolded in the Godfrey’s rooftop lounge, enhancing the elegant atmosphere that characterized the event.
Each designer brought a personal narrative to their collections, exemplified by Michigan-based designer Mary Mbiya of The Mbiya Collection. “My inspiration this year was all about sustainability,” Mbiya explained, highlighting her colorful and pattern-rich designs that celebrate African culture. Her opening piece—a pink and black chevron-printed halter neck dress with floral detailing, paired with black mesh gloves and a matching fascinator—epitomized the diversity of styles showcased at Michigan Fashion Week.
Partners and sponsors such as The Kresge Foundation, TLB: The Lip Bar, and Marc Jacobs played crucial roles in elevating the event, not only ensuring its success but also providing a platform for brands seeking to expand their presence within Michigan.
Michigan Fashion Week continues to serve as a testament to Detroit’s burgeoning fashion scene, offering a spotlight for local talent and fostering creativity that resonates far beyond the city limits.
