Berlin Fashion Week (BFW) and Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at driving sustainability within the fashion industry. This partnership, heralded as a significant step towards fostering responsible fashion practices, underscores a growing trend embraced by industry leaders.
The cornerstone of this collaboration is the adoption of Sustainability Requirements, pioneered by Copenhagen Fashion Week in collaboration with Knowledge Partners In Futurum and Dansk Fashion & Textile in January 2020. These requirements have undergone continual refinement, aligning with evolving industry dynamics and EU policy shifts, positioning them as a pivotal component of CPHFW’s sustainability strategy aimed at catalyzing change in the fashion landscape.
Now, with the newly forged alliance, Fashion Council Germany, as the coordinator of BFW, is poised to integrate these Sustainability Requirements into the fabric of Berlin Fashion Week. By mandating these Minimum Standards for participating brands, BFW aims to catalyze a culture of sustainability within its showcases.
This strategic partnership, bolstered by financial backing from the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises, is poised to transform Berlin Fashion Week into a beacon of responsible fashion. Through initiatives such as upcycling and the utilization of recycled materials, BFW seeks to champion social and ecological responsibility, positioning Berlin as a global leader in sustainable fashion.
Michael Biel, Germany’s State Secretary for Economic Affairs, expressed optimism about Berlin’s future as a hub for sustainable fashion, emphasizing the city’s commitment to setting an example for other fashion capitals worldwide.
Scott Lipinski, CEO of Fashion Council Germany, underscored the significance of this collaboration in driving innovation and meeting society’s evolving expectations. The partnership not only leverages the combined expertise and resources of both fashion weeks but also serves as a catalyst for industry-wide collaboration.
Cecilie Thorsmark, CEO of Copenhagen Fashion Week, hailed the partnership as a milestone in the global recognition of Sustainability Requirements, expressing hope for further collaborations within the industry.
As part of this alliance, approximately 35 brands participating in the official standard of Berlin Fashion Week show schedule will undergo onboarding and piloting phases to integrate the Minimum Standards. The full implementation is slated for February 2026, marking a transformative stride towards a more sustainable fashion ecosystem.
