Wine Australia has announced significant changes to its leadership team aimed at driving value for the wine sector and strengthening service delivery to levy payers.
The new appointments include Shirley Fraser as General Manager of Customer Engagement, Ned Hewitson as General Manager of Regulation and General Counsel, and Dr. Liz Waters as the new Chief Operating Officer.
Wine Australia CEO Dr. Martin Cole emphasized the importance of having a strong leadership team to navigate the challenges facing grape and wine businesses. He highlighted that the new strategic cycle, with the implementation of the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan and the development of the Strategic Plan 2025–30, requires talented and dedicated individuals in key roles.
Shirley Fraser, a graduate of Roseworthy and Future Leaders, brings extensive experience from various senior roles within the grape and wine sector, including positions at the Wine Industry Suppliers Association, Sorby Adams Wines, Constellation, Byrne Vineyards, Terraview AI, and Wine Collaborators. Dr. Cole expressed his enthusiasm for Fraser’s appointment, citing her diverse expertise, collaborative network-building abilities, and leadership focus on adding value to the sector.
Fraser stated her excitement about joining Wine Australia, emphasizing her commitment to assisting producers in leveraging networks and opportunities, expanding understanding of Wine Australia’s offerings, and listening to sector feedback.
Ned Hewitson, who has been promoted following his role as acting General Manager and Legal Counsel, will continue to lead Wine Australia’s regulatory services. Dr. Cole highlighted Hewitson’s contribution to maintaining continuity in regulatory services, supporting exporters, and representing the sector’s interests in international discussions.
Hewitson expressed his eagerness to lead the regulatory team, emphasizing the fundamental importance of regulation and market access to the Australian wine sector’s success.
Dr. Liz Waters, recognized for her leadership in Wine Australia’s research and innovation portfolio, has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Cole praised Waters for her achievements in grape and wine research, sector leadership, and her role in high-profile strategic projects. Waters will focus on driving Wine Australia’s corporate governance and strategy to meet the immediate and future needs of levy payers.
