The Griffith Regional Art Gallery is once again extending its invitation to contemporary jewellery practitioners across Australia to participate in the prestigious National Contemporary Jewellery Award (NCJA). This biennial event serves as a platform to spotlight the innovative and distinctive creations of some of the nation’s most talented artisans and jewellers.
Established in 1992 by the Griffith City Council, the NCJA aims to celebrate contemporary jewellery while also contributing to the development of the National Contemporary Jewellery Collection, now housed within the Gallery’s walls. The award comprises two distinguished accolades: a $5,000 cash prize coupled with acquisition into the esteemed National Contemporary Jewellery Collection, and the Design Excellence Award, offering a $1,000 cash prize.
Margaret Andreazza, Manager of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming showcase, stating, “We are delighted to extend an invitation once again to the contemporary jewellery community of Australia to participate in this significant exhibition, which highlights the finest artists and craftspeople shaping the landscape of contemporary jewellery and design. Over the past three decades, we have witnessed remarkable entries, and we eagerly anticipate the offerings of this year’s entrants.”
This year’s panel of judges includes Dr Rohan Nicol, Head of Discipline – Art at the University of Tasmania, and Leeanne Santoro, Curator of Sharing the National Collection at the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Their expertise and deep understanding of Australia’s contemporary jewellery scene bring invaluable insight to the adjudication process.
Ray Wholohan, Coordinator of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery, expressed gratitude for the caliber of judges for the 2024 NCJA, highlighting their extensive experience and unique perspectives on contemporary jewellery practice and the Gallery’s collection.
Ms Andreazza extended her best wishes to the contemporary jewellery community for the 2024 award, encouraging interested participants to access entry forms and review award terms and conditions on the Gallery’s website and Facebook page. She emphasized the importance of staying informed about critical information and deadlines associated with the award, inviting individuals to reach out to Gallery staff for further assistance if needed.
The culmination of the award will be the NCJA Exhibition, scheduled to commence on November 9th this year at the Gallery. The winners will be announced during a gala opening event on Friday, November 8th, 2024, marking a celebration of excellence and creativity in contemporary jewellery craftsmanship.
