Porsche has announced its extended commitment to the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, becoming the third manufacturer, following Nissan and Jaguar, to confirm participation in the all-electric racing series through its Gen4 era (2026-27/Season 13 onwards) and until at least 2030.
Porsche initially joined Formula E alongside Mercedes-Benz at the start of the 2019/2020 season (Season Six), during the Gen2 car era. The current Gen3 cars in the series achieve up to 350kW of power, a maximum recuperation of 600kW, and top speeds exceeding 300km/h. As the sport evolves, the Gen4 cars are expected to push these limits further, potentially reaching up to 600kW and a regenerative capacity of 700kW. Before this transition, the current Gen3 cars will receive an upgrade to ‘Gen3 Evo’ specifications at the start of Season 11 (2024-25).
In its five seasons of Formula E competition, Porsche has secured seven race wins and achieved a best finish of fourth place in the constructors’ championship. Notably, last year, Jake Dennis of Porsche’s customer team, Andretti Racing, clinched the drivers’ championship.
Reflecting on this milestone, Michael Steiner, Member of the Executive Board for Research and Development at Porsche AG, stated, “From the outset, we viewed our commitment to Formula E as a long-term endeavor. The evolution of racing vehicles highlights the immense development potential in e-mobility. We aim to extract more knowledge from Formula E to enhance our road-going sports cars. As one of the most competitive series in motor racing, it drives us towards technological excellence. We are excited to continue shaping the championship and advancing e-mobility.”
Pablo Martino, Head of the Formula E Championship at the FIA, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We’re thrilled to welcome Porsche as the third manufacturer committed to Formula E’s Gen4 era. Alongside Nissan and Jaguar, Porsche is synonymous with motorsport heritage and innovation. We eagerly anticipate this continued journey with the confirmed manufacturers and those yet to be announced, as we grow the championship’s momentum and build towards the future of electric racing.”
This announcement marks a significant step in Formula E’s development, underscoring the championship’s role as a critical platform for advancing electric vehicle technology and sustainability in motorsport.
