Ukrainian troops successfully shot down a Russian Su-25 attack aircraft near Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast on May 22, according to an operational update from the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
This marks the fifth Russian Su-25 jet destroyed by Ukraine this month. The Su-25, known by its NATO designation “Frogfoot,” is a Soviet-designed, heavily armored ground-attack aircraft that provides close air support for Russian ground troops. It plays a critical role in Russia’s intense attacks across various sections of the eastern front, particularly in Donetsk Oblast.
The General Staff reported the destruction of the aircraft, noting that the fighting remains intense in the Pokrovsk sector of Donetsk Oblast, where the latest aircraft was downed.
“The number of attacks in the Pokrovsk sector increased to 25,” the General Staff stated. “The enemy is attempting to break into our combat formations with assault groups and equipment. The situation remains tense, with nine combat engagements still ongoing.”
Previously, Ukraine claimed to have destroyed Su-25s on May 4, May 11, May 13, and May 18. As of May 18, the General Staff reported that Russia has lost over 350 planes since the start of the full-scale invasion.
