BMW’s forthcoming lineup of electric vehicles (EVs) is beginning to take shape, with confirmation that an SUV and a sedan will headline the German marque’s upcoming battery-powered Neue Klasse range, as reported by Top Gear. These EVs, slated to incorporate innovative design language and cutting-edge technology, are anticipated to enter production next year.
The announcement was made by BMW’s top executive, Oliver Zipse, during a conference call discussing the financial results for the first quarter of 2024. Zipse underscored the significance of the Neue Klasse initiative, highlighting it as the company’s most substantial investment to date.
“The Neue Klasse exemplifies our commitment to redefine the BMW brand for the future,” remarked Zipse. “It will debut with a Sports Activity Vehicle and a sedan in the current 3 Series segment.”
The decision to kick off the Neue Klasse lineup with an SAV and a sedan echoes the brand’s historical legacy and aligns with consumer expectations. Earlier previews of these models include the Vision Neue Klasse X, likely a precursor to the next-generation iX3, and the Vision Neue Klasse concept, anticipated to resemble the forthcoming sedan, potentially named the next i3.
BMW has been strategic in disclosing details about its upcoming EVs, hinting at designs influenced by concept vehicles and featuring advancements such as the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology, enhanced battery packs with capacities of up to 105 kWh, and an 800-volt system to boost charging speeds by 30 percent. The brand also plans to introduce at least six new EV models, promising a diverse range of options for consumers.
Amidst industry skepticism, BMW remains steadfast in its commitment to EVs, backed by tangible customer demand. Notably, the BMW Group, inclusive of Mini and Rolls-Royce, has witnessed robust EV sales, with 82,689 units delivered in the first four months of the year, constituting 13.9 percent of total sales and marking a 27.9 percent increase from the same period last year, as reported by BMW Blog.
