As the FIA World Endurance Championship gears up for its next round at Imola in 2024, Porsche stands ready to tackle any inclement weather that may descend upon the circuit. Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport, affirmed the team’s preparedness during a recent press briefing ahead of the race. Diuguid, recognizing varying opinions among drivers, expressed his personal belief that racing in wet conditions injects an extra layer of excitement, providing drivers with a platform to exhibit their prowess. He assured that Porsche is primed and eager to embrace the challenge, should rain make an appearance.
Echoing Diuguid’s sentiments, both Porsche factory drivers Matt Campbell and Kevin Estre conveyed their readiness to tackle the potential wet conditions at Imola. Campbell, displaying enthusiasm for the challenge, underscored the added dimension rain brings to the competition, particularly on a demanding circuit like Imola. Anticipating a race fraught with challenges, including the possibility of yellow flags and safety car interventions, Campbell remained optimistic about the thrilling spectacle it would create. Estre, while acknowledging the exhilaration of wet-weather racing, also acknowledged the associated risks. He emphasized the pivotal role team performance in dry conditions plays in determining the outcome of a rain-soaked race but reiterated his team’s preparedness to confront any scenario head-on.
Porsche’s potential advantage in rainy conditions stems from their prior testing experience at Imola earlier in the year. Diuguid, reflecting on the team’s rainy test sessions at the circuit, expressed confidence in Porsche’s ability to navigate the challenges posed by the circuit’s unique characteristics. Despite initial disappointment over unfavorable weather during testing, Diuguid highlighted Imola’s layout, featuring prominent kerbs and undulations, as factors that would contribute to an enthralling and demanding race for the drivers.
In terms of specific preparations for wet conditions, Diuguid emphasized Porsche’s comprehensive training regimen for its drivers throughout 2023 and 2024. All drivers, he noted, had ample opportunities to hone their skills in wet-weather driving, familiarizing themselves with the nuances of rain tires, particularly the Michelin rain tires designated for Hypercars. Diuguid concluded by affirming the team’s readiness to confront the challenges posed by wet conditions, confident in their ability to adapt and excel on race day.
