The World Car Awards panel has bestowed the prestigious title of World Luxury Car 2024 upon the BMW 5 Series/i5 during this year’s New York International Auto Show. This esteemed accolade was granted following deliberation by a panel comprising 100 automotive journalists worldwide, who also recognized the i5 alongside the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and EQE SUV as the Top Three in the World finalists for 2024.
The decision to crown the BMW 5 Series as the epitome of luxury stemmed from its exceptional performance in a field of 13 luxury vehicles. BMW, in a press release, attributed the victory to the compelling combination of power delivery from its electrified combustion engines and electric drive system, coupled with remarkable comfort levels tailored for long-distance journeys. Additionally, the vehicle’s array of digital advancements was cited as a contributing factor to its success.
Among the standout features of the BMW i5 are its capability for locally emission-free driving, an impressive estimated range of 362 miles, and rapid charging capabilities. With AC charging, the i5 can achieve a charging rate of up to 22 kilowatts, while DC charging boasts a remarkable 205 kilowatts. Notably, BMW highlighted that the vehicle’s range can extend by up to 97 miles with just 10 minutes of fast charging.
This latest triumph marks BMW’s ninth victory at the World Car Awards, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to excellence in luxury automotive design and engineering. Past accolades include the World Luxury Car title awarded to the 7 Series in 2016 and the World Performance Car honor bestowed upon the M5 in 2018.
The stringent requirements set forth by the World Car Awards underscore the significance of this achievement. To be eligible for consideration in the World Luxury Car category, automakers must produce the nominated vehicle in quantities exceeding 5,000 units annually, price it at the luxury-car level in primary markets, and ensure its availability in at least two major markets across two continents.
With this latest accolade, BMW reaffirms its position as a leader in luxury automotive innovation, setting a benchmark for excellence in the global automotive landscape.
