In a recent development, Sydney-based liquor wholesaler Gateway Liquor Wholesalers Pty Ltd has been placed into liquidation following a company members’ general meeting held earlier this month. The decision was formalized on March 1, 2024, and the company has since ceased all trading operations.
According to information available on the Gateway Liquor website, Joint and Several Liquidators Clifford Sanderson and John Gibbons of Dissolve have been appointed to oversee the liquidation process.
Gateway Liquor, a member of the National Independent Liquor Wholesalers Association (NILWA), has been a significant player in the liquor industry since 2012. Despite reports suggesting potential concerns for NILWA in light of Gateway’s liquidation, Managing Director Martin O’Mara clarified that the association remains optimistic about the future.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by independents in the current trading environment, O’Mara expressed sympathy for Gateway Liquor and emphasized the collective effort invested by its owner, family, management, and staff in establishing and growing the business. O’Mara extended gratitude to Gateway for their support as NILWA members and conveyed best wishes for their future endeavors.
O’Mara added, “It’s play-on for us as we continue to provide services to our current wholesaler members and advertise to grow wholesaler membership too.”
Despite the closure of Gateway Liquor, NILWA is actively exploring new opportunities. The association recently launched ‘Signature Drinks – Newcastle,’ an on-premise wholesale liquor solution tailored for local venues in Newcastle. Further details about this initiative are expected to be covered by The Shout in an upcoming report.
