The first-ever China Chuxiong Fashion Week kicked off on Saturday in Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, Yunnan province, marking a significant occasion for cultural communication. The seven-day event attracted participation from teams representing China, Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.
At the opening ceremony, models took to the runway, showcasing the vibrant and dazzling fashion inspired by the traditional Yi ethnic culture. The Yi ethnic costumes, deeply ingrained in the life of the Yi people, hold a special significance and have earned a place on the national intangible cultural heritage list. They have previously graced the runways of prestigious fashion weeks in Shanghai, New York, and Milan.
The event, hosted in Chuxiong Yi autonomous prefecture, serves as a platform for cultural exchange, bringing together diverse teams to celebrate and share their unique fashion expressions. Yi ethnic costumes, with a history of over 1,350 years, take center stage, demonstrating a fusion of cultural tradition with contemporary fashion.
Zhang Wenwang, the deputy Party secretary of Chuxiong, highlighted that the event’s purpose is to blend the rich cultural tradition of Yi ethnic costumes with modern fashion. This integration aims to breathe new life into the deep traditional heritage of Yi ethnic costumes, contributing to the revitalization of their cultural legacy and bringing the beauty of Yi ethnic costumes to contemporary fashion. The inaugural China Chuxiong Fashion Week promises to be a celebration of diversity, heritage, and the evolving landscape of fashion influenced by traditional roots.
