BMW has issued a recall for a small number of its 2024 BMW 4 Series Convertible models due to a potential fire hazard. The recall is prompted by a manufacturing defect in the cylinder head cover, impacting only five vehicles produced between October 10 and 11, 2023. The concern was identified during a quality assurance test on October 5, 2023, where a minor oil leak was detected.
The investigation revealed a glitch in the injection molding process, causing variations in the wall thickness of the cylinder head cover and the potential for hairline cracks. These cracks could lead to increased vibrations and heat, elevating the risk of engine oil leaking into the engine compartment and posing a fire hazard.
BMW dealers were informed of the recall on December 20, 2023, and affected vehicle owners will receive notifications via first-class mail starting February 9. BMW is committed to replacing the cylinder head covers of all affected vehicles at no cost to the owners.
