A series of thefts from keyless BMW cars in counties Tyrone and Armagh are under investigation by the police. Eight cars in the mid Ulster area have reportedly been targeted in December, with perpetrators using keyless entry technology to gain access. Stolen items include car parts such as steering wheels and personal belongings. Police are linking these recent incidents to five previous ones in September and October, bringing the total to six in Cookstown, three in Magherafelt, three in Coalisland, and one in Portadown. Authorities are cautioning BMW owners to take security measures to protect their vehicles.
Detective Sergeant Murphy emphasized the role of technology in these thefts, explaining that thieves can exploit keyless entry by redirecting the wireless signal from the key fob. He recommended establishing a security routine, including using a garage if available, and keeping all car keys, including spares, away from exterior doors and walls. Additionally, he suggested the use of a blocking pouch, often known as a Faraday pouch, lined with metallic material to prevent the wireless signal from the key fob.
