Spain’s Ministry of Defence has finalized a significant €1.695 billion deal with Airbus for the procurement of 16 C295 aircraft in Maritime Patrol and Surveillance configurations. This acquisition is poised to enhance Spain’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities and bolster surveillance efforts.
The C295 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) will replace retired P-3 Orion aircraft and is designed to perform anti-submarine warfare, reconnaissance, and armament capabilities. It also offers advanced connectivity for collaborative operations. Additionally, the C295 Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) will replace CN-235 VIGMA planes, focusing on maritime operations, anti-smuggling, anti-illegal immigration, and search-and-rescue missions.
“The aircraft will be fully designed and manufactured in Spain, fostering the national industrial defence footprint and sovereignty,” stated Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space. He highlighted that the Maritime Patrol version represents the most complex C295 mission configuration to date.
The assembly of these aircraft will take place at Airbus’ military facilities in Seville, contributing to the national industrial defense capabilities. This procurement underscores Spain’s comprehensive approach to addressing diverse operational needs, with both aircraft configurations complementing each other. Notably, the Spanish Air Force already operates a fleet of 13 Airbus C295 in transport configuration.
