COLORA – An investigation continues after a fire gutted a detached garage and destroyed its contents at a Colora property, causing an estimated $60,000 in damage, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.
A tenant called 911 at 7:58 p.m. Monday after discovering the fire in the 1200 block of Colora Road, prompting area volunteer fire companies to respond, fire officials said. The Community Fire Company of Rising Sun served as the incident commander, fire officials added.
About 40 volunteer firefighters battled the blaze for about 10 minutes before bringing it under control, fire officials said.
The fire caused an estimated $50,000 in structural damage to the detached garage and destroyed approximately $10,000 in contents, including a 2011 BMW X3, a vehicle in which the fire originated, according to a MOSFM spokesperson, who further reported that no one was injured. The spokesman identified the owner as Stephen Balderston.
During their investigation at the scene, MOSFM detectives concluded that the fire started in the engine compartment of the BMW, the fire official said. As of Tuesday, however, investigators were still trying to determine the cause, fire officials added.
