The Italian carmaker’s CEO, Jean-Philippe Imparato, has revealed plans to launch an all-electric SUV based on the large STLA platform to compete with the BMW iX, which is expected to hit the road in 2027 as part of a multi-year roadmap. In addition, Alfa Romeo’s electrification plans also include a compact SUV, possibly based on the Jeep Avenger, according to leaked images. Notably, Imparato mentioned that the car might not be produced in Western Europe due to lower production volumes and uncertainty about the evolution of the segment.
As far as their proposed high-end SUVs go, it’s targeting the iX and Porsche Cayenne EV, but this Italian debut will prioritize on-road performance. To maximize aerodynamic efficiency and range, it is expected to have a lower ride height than regular SUVs. According to Autocar, the upcoming SUV is destined to become the flagship of Alfa Romeo’s lineup and will be larger than the next-generation all-electric Stelvio. The main focus will be to have a significant impact on the North American and Chinese markets.
Despite the SUV’s larger size, the platform’s performance capabilities are impressive. Using the large STLA chassis, it can accommodate up to three electric motors, potentially delivering four-figure horsepower. Imparato stresses that, as with all Alfa Romeos, the focus is on delivering a superior driving experience. From a practical point of view, the platform’s 800V architecture guarantees fast charging capabilities. Charging from 10 to 80 percent is expected to take just 30 minutes, with an estimated range of around 800 kilometers.
In addition, the upcoming Alfa Romeo SUV is expected to feature Stellantis’ cutting-edge technology suite, STLA Brain, which is expected to offer hands-free driving capabilities, advanced infotainment systems and digital experiences comparable to those offered by Tesla.
The large SUV is just one of Alfa Romeo’s ambitious electrified lineup. The Italian brand plans to launch several electric models, including a subcompact crossover and a possible replacement for the Giulietta compact hatchback.
