BMW has expanded its range of the eighth-generation 2024 BMW 5 Series by introducing plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions of the luxury sedan. The new models, 530e and 550e xDrive, are set to be launched in Europe this November, with availability in Australia expected by the end of the year. The 530e is projected to have a pure-electric driving range of up to 103km, while the 550e xDrive boasts a total power output of 360kW and 700Nm of torque, enabling it to go from 0-100km/h in just 4.3 seconds.
Both models feature a compact electric motor integrated within the eight-speed automatic transmission casing, along with power electronics. The 530e comes with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, delivering a total of 220kW/450Nm, while the 550e xDrive combines a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine with the electric motor for the maximum power output.
To enhance efficiency, BMW has included underbody panelling and air deflectors to reduce drag, resulting in a 10km increase in the pure-electric driving range. The PHEVs also come with BMW’s adaptive energy recuperation system, which adjusts power recovery based on data from the sat-nav and driver assistance sensors.
Furthermore, a 19.2kWh lithium-ion battery contributes to a lowered centre of gravity and improved handling, all while maintaining a spacious 520-litre boot. The new battery can be fully charged in just three hours and 15 minutes using the appropriate charging infrastructure.
The two PHEV models showcase some additional features, such as new alloy wheels and a unique soundscape composed by Hans Zimmer. While launch dates for Australia are yet to be confirmed, the BMW 530e is priced from €65,300 ($A108,000) in Germany, and the more powerful 550e xDrive will cost €77,300 ($A128,000).
