BMW has expanded its lineup of electrified vehicles with the introduction of plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants for the eighth-generation 5 Series sedan. The new models, the 530e and 550e xDrive, offer an impressive pure electric range of up to 103 kilometers, significantly enhancing the electric capabilities of the sedan.
The BMW 530e serves as the entry-level PHEV model and is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Together, the hybrid powertrain produces a peak power of 295 bhp and a maximum torque of 450 Nm. The 530e can run for up to 103 kilometers on pure electric mode, providing a convenient and efficient driving experience.
On the other hand, the 550e variant is powered by a larger 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six petrol engine paired with an electric motor. With this combination, the hybrid powertrain delivers an impressive peak power of 483 bhp and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. The 550e features an all-wheel drive system and can travel for up to 90 kilometers on pure electric mode.
Both the 530e and 550e variants of the new 5 Series come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox for smooth and precise shifting. BMW has made advancements in the electric motor technology of these PHEV models, increasing the 530e’s torque output from 280 Nm to 450 Nm.
To support its electric capabilities, both PHEV variants of the new 5 Series are equipped with a 19.4 kWh battery pack, which can be charged at up to 7.4 kW. BMW claims that using a 7.4 kW charger, the battery can be fully charged in approximately three hours and 15 minutes. Alternatively, the battery can also be charged using a household socket, which takes around 12 hours for a full charge.
Visually, the PHEV variants of the new 5 Series resemble the standard petrol-powered model. However, they feature distinct 19-inch alloy wheels and a flap for the battery charging power located on the fender.
With the introduction of these plug-in hybrid variants, BMW offers a greener and more sustainable option for customers who want a luxury sedan with impressive electric range and performance.
