The Western Australian government is making strides in promoting electric vehicle (EV) travel across the state with the opening of a new EV charging station in Jurien Bay. As part of the government’s Electric Vehicle Strategy, this charging station aims to provide a crucial link between Perth and Northampton while making EV travel more accessible and environmentally friendly.
Located at the Murray Street Road Reserve near the Indian Ocean Drive shopping complex, the Jurien Bay fast charger offers both residents and tourists the opportunity to charge their EVs. The station is equipped with a DC 150-kilowatt fast charger, providing a quick top-up in as little as 20 minutes. Additionally, there is an AC 7.6-kW charger available for added convenience.
The collaboration between Synergy and the Shire of Dandaragan has made the installation of this charging station possible, with a focus on delivering a fast and efficient user experience. This EV charging station in Jurien Bay is just one of 11 operational charging stations across Western Australia. Popular destinations like Kings Park, Carnarvon, Broome, and Albany already have charging stations in place.
Furthermore, Synergy has plans to open more EV charging sites in Southern Cross and Coolgardie. Horizon Power also has intentions to introduce EV charging stations in Exmouth, Karratha, Esperance, and Denham. With a budget of $21 million, the Western Australian Electric Vehicle Network is set to become the longest of its kind in Australia.
Spanning 49 locations and stretching over 7,000 kilometers, this network will provide 98 EV charging stations from Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the south and east to Eucla.
Energy Minister Bill Johnston expressed his excitement about the newly opened Jurien Bay charging site, which now connects Perth to Northampton. The minister noted that the EV charging sites are boosting tourism and making electric transportation more accessible for communities across Western Australia. Climate Action Minister Reece Whitby emphasized the significance of fast charger deployment in driving EV adoption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of the state’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
